Gas Fireplaces

Gas fireplaces, stoves, inserts, and logs make up the highest number of our appliance sales. Gas is convenient, inexpensive, doesn’t require power, and can be very efficient. In addition, the new technologies in gas fireplaces have made them more realistic than ever.

You have a few options with gas products. You can use naturally vented products that take room air and use it to help draft the gases up the chimney (yes, even with an outside air kit), but you lose most of the heat generated by the fire, plus some that were already in your house.

You can use vent-free products (that aren’t really vent-free, just room-vented), but there are some concerns that you need to be aware of before buying.

You can use the most popular technology, which is direct-vent or balanced-flue technology, which is a sealed system. Direct vent gas products bring all of their combustion air in from the outside and expel their combustion gases right back outside. This results in much higher efficiency. There is also no chance of heat loss up the chimney, or harmful gases coming into your home. Direct vent products can be installed with the chimney going out through a side wall or can be vented through the roof to give the look of a real fireplace chase.

Here are some facts to be aware of when considering gas as your fuel option.

Gas isn’t nearly as inexpensive to heat with as wood but is similar to pellets and much cheaper than electric.

Gas requires gas lines. This is an additional cost that you should be prepared for when shopping. Also, the route for the gas lines needs to be safe, and preferably, concealed from view.

If you are in an area that does not offer Natural Gas service, you will require a Propane, or L.P. tank. While you can lease a tank, buying your tank ensures you can buy your propane from any local source.

Gas equipment, if not installed correctly, is dangerous. Using mismatched fittings, hoses and adapters is a leading cause of fires involving gas. Finally, a quality installation always includes a pressure test to ensure, without a doubt, that your system has no leaks.
